Presentations
Lorna’s presentations and workshops are lively and fun and can be tailored to fit the age and the group. She can present to all age groups, is open to groups of any size and is definitely open to travel. Lorna’s books, although hockey based, also deal with relationship choices, bullying, teamwork, family dynamics, resolving conflicts, group roles, understanding and expressing feelings, commitment and perseverance.
School Author Visit – Lorna will discuss the process of getting a book published! Her visit will include how she goes from idea to finished product, editing, and some of the tricks and secrets of publishing both fiction and non-fiction. She will encourage the students to love reading and writing. Of course, she will read from one of her novels to instill that love of reading. A question and answer period will end the visit. She will wear the new 2010 Olympic jersey and talk about what is inside the Maple Leaf and she’ll bring her 2002 Olympic Hockey jersey that is signed by Wayne Gretzky. Cost is $450 for a full day and $250 for a half day.
Workshops
Creating Cool Characters – Let’s have some fun and develop some cool characters. In this workshop, students will learn how to create characters that will jump off the page by role playing. Lorna brings a suitcase full of costumes and students will get to put them on and pretend to be a character. First the acting, then the writing. Emphasis will be on having fun with description and dialogue.
Lights, Camera, Action – Lorna will bring her suitcase full of costumes and students will get to perform and even create skits! After performing, students will write stories that are filled with action and action words.
Telling True Tales - Writing non-fiction can be as fun and creative as writing fiction. With this workshop, Lorna will guide the students so they can learn how to write page-turning non-fiction. Students will learn interviewing skills and how to research and compile information. Students should be prepared to have fun while telling true tales.
Mystery Writing – In this workshop students will learn about the craft of mystery writing, including plotting, pacing and setting. Students will learn how to create a protaganist who is believable (even if the main character is an alien or animal) and how to use minor characters to advance the mystery. And what about those red herrings?
Workshops are $450 for a full day and $250 for a half day. Cost is negotiable for longer workshops and specific teaching jobs.
